The cost of single glazing

Old glass is doing more damage than you think.

Most older Nelson homes were built with single-pane windows that bleed heat in winter, bake rooms in summer, and let UV fade everything they touch. Retrofit double glazing fixes all four — without ripping out your existing frames.

Cold rooms in winter

Single glazing loses heat ~10× faster than insulated walls — that's heat you've paid to make.

Condensation & mould

Cold glass meets warm room air → water on every sill. Mould, rotted joinery, ruined curtains.

Faded furniture & floors

UV rays bleach timber, fabric and art. Thermoglaz blocks ~80% of UV transmission.

Power bills that hurt

Heating a leaky home in a South Island winter is expensive. Less heat escaping = less heating needed.

Two retrofit pathways

Timber frames or aluminium — we do both.

Whatever your existing window frames are made of, we have a proven retrofit system to upgrade them to modern thermal performance without ripping them out.

Timber Frames

For character homes with original joinery

A pioneering, reliable process: we remove your existing single-glazed panes from your timber windows and doors, then install new high-performance thermally insulated double-glazed glass into your existing frames.

  • Keep the look and character of your original timber joinery
  • Significantly cheaper than full window replacement
  • Minimal disruption — most homes done in a day or two
  • Compatible with leadlight, colonial bar and coloured glass

Right from the start Scott was fantastic at walking me through all the options. Ratu and the team carried out exemplary work — having had a bad install previously, I can see such a difference. Incredibly impressed by the care and time gone into my new double glazing. Wouldn't even bother looking elsewhere.

Thermoglaz did a great job at retrofitting our aluminium windows as well as installing full replacements. Despite our house already being fully insulated, the double glazing has certainly increased the warmth and comfort of our home, as well as noticeable noise reduction. Great to work with from quote through to installation.

Common questions

What people ask before they get a quote.

Can I really keep my existing window frames?
Yes — that's the whole point of retrofit. We remove your single-glazed panes and slot in new double-glazed units that fit your existing timber or aluminium frames. You keep the character (and the cost stays well below a full replacement).
How long does the install actually take?
Most homes are done within 1–2 days. We work room by room so your home is liveable throughout. There's no major mess, no replastering, no scaffolding.
How much does retrofit double glazing cost?
It depends on the number of windows, the glass type and any frame work needed — but it's typically a fraction of the cost of full window replacement. Your free in-home quote gives you exact pricing, and we have finance options available.
Will it really stop the condensation?
For the vast majority of homes, yes. Condensation forms when warm room air hits cold glass. Double glazing keeps the inner pane warm, so the air doesn't condense on it. You'll notice the difference the first cold morning.
What about leadlights, colonial bars or coloured glass?
We retrofit all of these. Your character glass features can be preserved and incorporated into the new double-glazed units. Talk to us at your assessment.
Do you offer a warranty?
Yes — both product and workmanship are warranted. We're WGANZ and Site Safe accredited members, and we've been doing this for over 20 years.
